Hello!

On November 28th, I experienced a subarachnoid hemorrhage and was in the ICU here in Seattle until December 6th. This was a rare and random bursting of a vein in my brain associated with no known risk factors. Fortunately, I suffered no permanent or long term physical or neurological effects, as this was the least dangerous type of brain bleed, as brain bleeds go.

However, the short and mid-term effects of this hemorrhage are that I am unable to look at any type of screen for any length of time, nor am I able to engage in any heavy or complex thinking/processing without incurring both a severe headache and deep mental fatigue. To me, it’s similar to a broken arm; my brain is out of commission for the time being, but will be fully healed given time and proper rest.

Therefore, major changes need to be made while I heal up.

  • I will not be working at all through 12/31/22 and this pause could extend into January as well.

  • All 2022 federal tax returns will be extended if you engage me this year. Partnership and S-corporation returns will not be filed by 3/15/23 but will be filed on/before 9/15/23. Personal and C-corporation returns will not be filed by 4/18/23 but will be filed on/before 10/16/23.

  • I must significantly reduce the total number of returns I prepare this year and unfortunately some of you will receive disengagement letters from me between now and Christmas. I anticipate the bulk of the reduction will be related to my individual tax return practice, but business tax returns will also be affected. For those of you that I cannot help this year, below is a short list of referrals. I with this list was longer but as you are aware, good CPAs tend to be overbooked.

Thank you all so, so much for your understanding and patience. I apologize for the inconvenience this will cause, but I can simply only do so much until I’m healed and I am going to proceed with an abundance of caution until then. My wife has been reviewing emails from you and will continue to do so. I will keep you updated as to my progress over the coming weeks and months.
